Hefei-based artist Yang Chongguang’s individual exhibition “Spring is a Liar” opened on the 15th of May 2021. Comprising newly completed acrylic works on canvas, the show is scheduled to end on the 27th of June. This is the first solo presentation by the artist at Gallery 55.

Yang Chongguang was born in Wuhu, Anhui Province in 1955. From 1990 to 1996, Yang Chongguang studied at the Institute of Arts in Brunswick, Germany. From 1997 to 2014, Yang Chongguang served as the director of the Center for Modern Art at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei, where he lectured on the history of modern art. Yang Chongguang’s works have been collected by both European museums and private collectors.

Yang Chongguang’s works seem like a dream but not a dream. The sentimental and hopeful mood in them confirms the journey of life and the status quo of life so sincerely.

In recent years, ruins become the source of inspiration for his interpretation of "Chinese-style expressionism", as well as his exploration of human nature and the secret soil of "existence". Yang Chongguang condenses his innate compassion, exploration and expression of human nature into a three-dimensional ruins bearing time.
