Gallery 55 is pleased to announce that Zheng Mengqiang’s individual exhibition "TIDE" will open on the 3rd of September and run through the 25th.

Zheng Mengqiang’s works tend to use the hometown he is familiar with and people he is close to as the carrier to express his emotions. He builds a safe environment with a sense of belonging through the pictures, so as to present a real emotional world closer to his heart and freedom.

The tide was one of the most common sights he saw while growing up. The tide fluctuated day and night, but followed an extremely fixed regularity and periodicity, conveying in its change a notion of time.

This trait of tide is obviously similar to the various emotions that Zheng Mengqiang has been capturing and trying to describe. The description of "two people" in this exhibition, whether it is ambiguous, restrained or alienated, is like a tide, showing periodic ups and downs over time. The state in which two people care about each other, or even pull each other, is similar to the relationship between water and gravity in the natural phenomenon of tides.

Zheng Mengqiang was born in China in 1987. He received a B.A. in painting from Tianjin Academy of Art in 2011. Currently, he lives and works in Beijing.
