Zhang Yongji’s individual exhibition "New Clothes for the Wild Seed" opens on the 16th of December 2023. The artist presents his latest series of mixed media works. The show runs through the 28th of January 2024.

In the series "New Clothes for Wild Seed", Zhang Yongji tried a fixed way of working. He took ready-made images from films, removed the main characters, and then used a method of "manual sharpening" to piece together the regular outline of the objects in the background, and finally carved out the stick figure pattern on the back plate of the work, letting some engraved flowers and stars line the "landscape" below the lost protagonist.

Zhang Yongji was born in Guangzhou in 1989. He graduated from the Experimental Art College of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2018 with a master’s degree. Currently, he lives and works in Beijing.

Zhang Yongji’s creation is based on digital images, involving installation, video and other media. He takes the logic of digital image production as a core method to interfere the reality. From the capture of reality by images to the synthesis of images, he tries to create a new path in terms of the possibility of image production and image reception, exploring the relationship between the reality and digital images about right, will, labor and identity.
