HE Liping:I am not Kidding
He Liping’s debut individual exhibition at the gallery “I am not Kidding” opens on the 10th of January, showcasing installation and neon light works. The exhibition ends on the 1st of February.
He Leping’s creations are characterized by their roots in the mundane, a humorous exterior / serious core, directorial meticulous planning, and boundaryless authentic expression. He elevates slices of daily life into contemporary art, making the common streets of China a local "street culture”. For He Liping, the local street is the essence of the city. He believes that street cultures like skateboarding and graffiti are mostly imported, while the local street is the cultural root of the Chinese people and the true street culture of China. He believes that daily life is the theme of creation, focusing on the overlooked things and emotions in life, and using works to magnify the common characteristics of the times and evoke public resonance. Although his works present a humorous and teasing style, his creative thinking is extremely serious. He will think through the details like a director before starting to create. He Liping refuses to be labeled, is not bound by medium or scale, and pursues true expression through diverse forms such as on-site, video, and installation. He Leping has led contemporary art out of the white cube and into the hustle and bustle of the city, allowing ordinary people to encounter art while buying vegetables or shopping, and reevaluating the artistic value of the everyday. At the same time, he has reconstructed the understanding of "street culture" from a local perspective, providing a vivid sample for the localization of contemporary art.
He Liping was born in China in 1983. He obtained a B.A. in Sculpture from Chengdu Academy of Fine Art in 2007; and a M.F.A. from Southwest Jiaotong University in 2015. Currently, he lives and works in Chengdu, China.
