QIU Shijie:Unearth

Curator:  WANG Kaimei

55 is please to announce that Hangzhou based artist QIU Shijie will return to the art scene after a 12-year-absence with a solo exhibition entitled UNEARTH, which is scheduled to open on the 11th of April, 2015. This is the 1st of a series of exhibitions lining up to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the gallery.

UNEARTH consists of three parts: A Gust of Wind; Walking; Every Breath You Take.

In the world of Qiu Shijie, the omnipresence of life immerses in everything, from a new bud on a tree in his own studio to the dust of a star some light-years away. When the physicality of distance turns into the backdrop of one’s personal memories and sentimentality, the reflection over the known and the unknown becomes art. UNEARTH reveals the artist Qiu Shijie’s long-term profound thinking on the nature, the society and the human being through three pieces of artworks.

Every year from March to April, the brightest seven stars in the Orion line up in the sky. They rise from the southeast horizon and fall towards the southwest direction. When the light of the stars arrives in the earth and the human beings on the earth, as if A Gust of Wind, what would be left untouched? The world is in its silent presence. We are all one part of it. The notion of a unisonous inner and outer space starts from the imagination of the celestial constellation and the human hair implanted into the gallery wall.

Walking is an artwork rethinking the social content of the land in the contemporary Chinese society. The artist purchased earth of seven different colors on internet and brought them into the gallery. The landless farmers and the borderless traders add another perspective to the ritual of walking. Like when Richard Lang walked his way along the Yangzi River in China, he brought the earth along the river and made muddy paintings on the wall, Qiu’s action of bringing in earth to the gallery space is an attempt to reconnect the modern people with the land that has become further and further away from us.

If the process of Walking offers a way to get into the artwork, the artwork Every Breath You Take offers us a way to get into the artist. The process of art making is caught between each breath taken like stardust in the galaxy. Again, the enigma of the world is the illusion of art, a metaphor in Tomas Transtromer’s poetic world: Waking up is a parachute jump from dreams…

QIU Shijie was born in China in 1970. He graduated from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, majoring in sculpture. He currently lives and works in Hangzhou.
