55 @ Art021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair 2017

Gallery 55 participated Shanghai Art021 Contemporary Art Fair (APPROACH Sector) for the second time with art works by Beijing-based artists Chen Duxi and Guo Donglai.

Chen Duxi paints water with lines, endless real water lines integrated with virtual ones on Chinese silk. Gaps between lines build water waves, up and down dynamically. Fine lines between subtle gaps build water waves implicate deep influence of Chinese painting in the spirit of consciousness since Song and Ming Dynasties. Using the Southern Song Dynasty painter Ma Yuan’s "water map" as the blueprint, Chen Duxi’s water beats with unlimited waves. At the same time, a contemporary artist, holding his cheeks with his hands, immersed in nature, humanities, and the thinking of history and future in a fasting moving era.

Chen Duxi was born in China in 1983. He holds a B.A. in Painting from Chengdu Academy of Fine Arts in China. He attended a Master Class at Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in 2008. Currently he lives and works in Beijing, China.

Guo Donglai does not limit himself within original or artificial or even industrial status of materials, but reconstructs new lingual and significant connections among different materials – discover unprecedented meaning during the process of changing material status and re-organization. Precisely speaking, he creates a magical match with natural materials and industrial materials; they look like being “apart”, while actually they are “generating new product”. In this way, he discards reunification, and exposes the discussion and fusion of materials’ “original status” and “artificial status”. The artworks of Guo Donglai present a rather remarkable art level; they not only dissolves the trace of “human” and “me”, but reactivates isolated objects through encounter of materials. To sum up, the artist blurs out the boarder between handcraft and nature, and shows an unprecedented existence and concept through reassembling materials.

Guo Donglai was born in China in 1985. He obtained his B.A. and M.A. from National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in 2008 and 2012 respectively. In 2015, he finished his studies at Luca Caccioni Studio of Visual Arts, Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna in Italy with a second M.A. Currently, he lives and works in Beijing.
